Marble

MARBLE — mineral, that belongs to hard limestones, wonderful in its hardness and capability to great polishing. Doubtless, marble has been used since the most ancient times as a construction material for construction of buildings and for arrangement of different vessels.

Marbles are spread widely enough. The most famous marbles are the ones from Italy. Famous white sculptural marble is mined close to Karrara in Tuscan. Also yellowish Parian marble from Greece is renowned too — a favorite material of ancient Greek sculptors. In USA considerable strata of marble are laid in eastern part of the country — in Appalachians and other regions. Mining of marble also takes place in North Africa. A major deposit of dolomite marbles is in Natal (SAR).

Marble is used as a stone for memorials (monumental sculpture and gravestone), as a piece structural stone for external facing and internal finishing of buildings in a shape of crushed and ground stone, and also a piece (cut) stone. Marble slabs of pure calcite marble find their application in electrical engineering (panels of instrument, distribution and dispatcher boards, etc.). Marble aggregate and crushed sand are used in architecture and building at manufacturing of stone mosaic and plaster, as well as concrete aggregates. Marble powder is used in agriculture.

In Russia marble mining takes place in the Urals and Far East, in Karelia, in Altai, in the Krasnoyarsk Region; in Ukraine — in trans-Carpathians, the Crimea, the Donetsk region; as well as in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Uzbekistan and East Kazakhstan. White fine-grained sculptural marble of Mal'guzarsk deposit in Uzbekistan, estimated by specialists, is better than famous Karrara.
