Onyx

ONYX — mineral, belt-пstrained kind of agate. The name came from Greek, "onyx" — nail. There are distinguished onyx proper (agate onyx) – white and black layers; carnelian-onyx (cornelian onyx) – red and white layers; sardonyx; chalcedony-onyx – white and grey layers. Hardness 7, density 2,5-2,6. Semitransparent or translucent. Beauty of onyx is exposed more fully in the stones or entails. The best onyx comes from Arabian peninsula, from India, Brazil, Uruguay and USA. Some strained types of calcite or aragonite, e.g. Californian and Mexican onyx, are called as marble onyx. It is used more often as semi-precious stone.
